      1. There's nothing new in this, of course. Spain will never allow a self-determination referendum in Catalonia. In one sense it's not important, as very few Catalans are counting on it happening either - it's not generally seen as the route to independence. @VilaWeb_EN/1410261355672838144

In an ideal world, if 80% of a people who constitute a nation want to hold such a referendum, then an agreed, binding one overseen by international observers should happen.

Catalans disagree on the route out of this impasse, but despite these differences 80% want to resolve this at the ballot box; that is across all political divides. Why is that so unacceptable to Spain?

'The Constitution doesn't allow it' is the usual answer, but this is not a convincing argument against simply hearing the voice of the people. I have never heard a philosophical or moral argument for refusing it; just the tired mechanical issues around the constitution.

If Spain thought it would win a referendum the obstacles would be cleared away. They don't want us to go, but yet cannot articulate why we should *want* to belong in Spain, and never offer positive reasons for remaining. That speaks volumes for what Catalonia represents to Spain.
